There are many reasons why I think MIcrosoft's efforts are not going to top Apple:
First off....Zune? WTF is Zune? What meaning does it have? Just from the name it sounds like they are trying way too hard. At least iPod works in conjunction to Apple's other line of products and it makes sense. Zune isn't even a word. iPod is a much friendly and cooler name than Zune.
Second, the Zune looks like a cheap knockoff of the iPod, and its already been deemed the "iPod Killer". Ok, you aren't going to kill the iPod by imitating it. Knockoffs are never cooler than the original. Plus we are talking about Microsoft here, when is the last time they ever did any innovation in the computing industry?
Third off, since they suck at innovating and all they can do is immitate, they will always be one step behind Apple and Apple is already years ahead of them and have a stronghold on the music download industry.
But, I'll invite Zune into the market. Since Apple doesn't really have any competition this could create enough competition to make the iPod lineup even better than they arlready are.

It's not really outdated in the sense that it is still the best and latest iPhone out there. But I know what you are getting at.
Well I think I would be an unwise consumer to pay full upgrade price for old tech. If there is no iPhone in June, I might give Apple a little time to tell all of us whose contracts are up what their plan is, but I doubt I'm going to be willing to hold onto an old phone long enough to see what Apple has in store. At that point I'll give serious consideration to another platform, but I'll resist it as much as possible because I do enjoy Apple hardware. I will not, however, tolerate horrible update cycles and pay full price for them. If that's going to be Apple's game, I won't be playing.

$20/year is a reasonable charge, but it seems terribly disproportionate to the $99/year for MobileMe. I'm guessing if there's any validity to this rumor, we'll see some price restructuring for MobileMe. At least I'd hope so.

That would be realy awesome! cmon not only would it reduce scratches on the ipod but make it even cooler than it already is. This wold be one of the many features that would kill the Micro$oft "iPod Killer". I hope this is true....:D

Ever since the iPhone came out I've said that it will eventually replace the iPod. That day may be coming sooner than we guessed.
Someday the iPhone will be just like the iPad. There's no 'iPod Touch,' just an 'iPhone' that you buy with or without a 3G or 4G chip. And it's up to you if you want to buy service to go along with it or not. (They could still call it the 'iPhone.' The chip-less one would come with a booklet telling you about Skype and Viber and other wifi phone services.)
Such a device would naturally go on sale before the holiday season, so maybe we're close to that happening. I don't think it'll be this year, but maybe they're getting us ready for the year when it does happen.
Does it really have to be one or the other, why can't both products exist happily.

With that in mind it makes sense for them to be released at the same time. As for the other iPods they do exactly what you expect from a music player, they play music. I'm honestly surprised by a lot of you. The whole "no single android phone outsells the iPhone!" argument, is foolish and weak. It's a platform war. You basically get ONE CHOICE with the iPhone. Now it's a great choice, but of course it's going to be a top seller as a result. There are so many good Android choices out there that a single model isn't going to dwarf the others. Since there are, you know, options? As a platform it seems iOS is getting whooped on. Does that not register, or are people that much in denial?
Now myself, I like my iPhone, but come on...in this case we are talking about platforms...So weird...

So for Apple to offer its older model in the same price range is only leveling the field and proving that it's not just Android, but the price that is driving Android's sales so fast. Compete in the same ball fields at the same pricing and you see that Apple picks up many of those people who claimed they couldn't afford one or didn't want to switch to a different provider.

As the owner of a 1GHz eMac that will be 8 years old this summer, I've been targeting this as the year to upgrade to a 27" Core i7 iMac. We also have a MacBook that is getting up there in computer age. I'm really looking forward to this refresh, but I'll be waiting until this summer when they are shipping with Lion installed. I figure I've waited this long already, what's another few months?! I can't wait to do some home video editing on a machine that can easily handle it and dabble in some gaming on games that aren't 8-10 years old (even if most of my gaming will still be on the Xbox 360).

If I were in the market for a smartphone and could choose a $49 iPhone 3GS vs. a $199+ iPhone 4 vs. a $199+ Android...I would very very seriously consider the 3GS since it is AT LEAST 4x cheaper...and in reality, does 99% of the iPhone 4 (I have the 3GS and as far as I can tell the 4 simply added Facetime and a front camera for facetime use).
